Florence museum free admission update 2019

The Florence museums have issued an update with the new free museum admission schedule. The new dates cover Uffizi, Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens up to March 1st 2020. Broadly the dates are similar to the new Coliseum schedule but not exactly. To make things more complicated the three sites do not share the exact same schedule.  The difference will push visitors to the free site. This will mean larger crowds for that site but possibly smaller crowds for the site that still requires an admission ticket.

For all the museum sites of the Uffizi Galleries (Uffizi, Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens), on the following special occasions in 2019:

March 24; June 23; October 11; October 31.

Museum Week from the 5th to the 10th of March 2019.

The first Sunday of the six months between October 2019 and March 2020: 6 October 2019; 3 November 2019; 1 December 2019; 5 January 2020; 2 February 2020; 1 March 2020.

Only for the Uffizi, on the following special occasions in 2019:

May 26; June 2; August 11; November 6.

Museum week from the 5th to the 10th of March 2019.

The first Sunday of the six months between October 2019 and March 2020: 6 October 2019; 3 November 2019; 1 December 2019; 5 January 2020; 2 February 2020; 1 March 2020.

Only for Pitti Palace and Boboli Gardens, on the following special occasions in 2019:

March 17; August 4; August 27; November 30.

Museum week from the 5th to the 10th of March 2019.

The first Sunday of the six months between October 2019 and March 2020: 6 October 2019; 3 November 2019; 1 December 2019; 5 January 2020; 2 February 2020; 1 March 2020.

On the above-mentioned occasions, tickets shall be collected at ticket offices, it is not possible to make reservations and priority admissions are not valid.

The total number of free days

is now higher than the older free Sunday schedule but you’ll notice no free date for the month of July or September. There are a few months with clumps of free dates. March has not only culture week but additional free days. June,October and November have a couple free days.

Obviously the new schedule

is much more complicated than the old first Sunday of the month. On the other hand if your trip coincides with the new dates you may decide to take advantage. Like always with free museum admission the question becomes is braving the crowds worth the savings? In general the free dates are better for the museums you have less interest in. If you really want to visit one of these sites pick a normal day and enjoy the relatively smaller crowds.
